How it is calculated

BMI = weight in kg / (height in metres x height in metres)
1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 inch = 0.0254 m, 1 pound = 0.4536 kg
Healthy weight range = 18.5 to 24.9 x height in metres squared

Worked example

  • Weight 72 kg, height 5 feet 7 inches = 67 inches = 1.70 m.
  • Height squared = 1.70 x 1.70 = 2.89.
  • BMI = 72 / 2.89 = 24.9, normal on the WHO scale.
  • On the Asian scale (overweight from 23) the same BMI counts as overweight.

BMI for Pakistanis and South Asians

The World Health Organization uses 18.5 to 24.9 as the normal BMI range for adults. Research on South Asian people shows that diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease often begin at a lower BMI, so the WHO expert panel suggested lower action points for Asian populations: overweight from 23 and obese from 27.5.

That is why this calculator shows both categories. If your BMI is between 23 and 25, you are normal on the international scale but may already have a higher risk. A waist size above about 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women is another warning sign.

BMI does not measure body fat directly. Athletes with heavy muscle can show a high BMI, and older people can show a normal BMI with low muscle. Use BMI as a starting point and talk to a doctor about your own health.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI?

For adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal on the WHO scale. For South Asians, many doctors prefer a BMI below 23.

How do I calculate BMI with feet and inches?

Choose kg and feet / inches, enter both values and press Calculate. The calculator converts your height to metres for you.

What BMI is obese?

A BMI of 30 or more is obese on the WHO scale. On the Asian scale, obesity starts at 27.5.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It does not tell muscle from fat, and it is not used on its own for children, pregnant women or bodybuilders.

Can I use this for children?

Children need BMI-for-age percentile charts. The calculator shows a warning if you enter an age under 18.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.

About the BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple number that compares your weight with your height. Doctors, gyms, insurance forms and job medicals use it as a quick first check of whether a person is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.

In Pakistan most people know their height in feet and inches and their weight in kilograms, so this calculator accepts that mix directly. You can also use centimetres or pounds if your report or scale shows those units.

Because South Asians tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, the calculator shows both the international WHO category and the lower Asian cut-offs. Use the result to start a conversation with your doctor, not as a diagnosis.
