How to use this calculator

  1. Pick what you want: CGPA from semesters, semester GPA from courses, or CGPA to percentage.
  2. For CGPA, enter each semester GPA and its credit hours. If you leave credit hours empty, all semesters count equally.
  3. For GPA, enter marks out of 100 (or pick the letter grade) and the credit hours of each course.
  4. Press Calculate to see your result, the breakdown table and a WhatsApp share link.

How it is calculated

Grade points of a course = grade point x credit hours
GPA = total grade points of the semester / total credit hours of the semester
CGPA = total grade points of all semesters / total credit hours of all semesters
Percentage (common estimate) = CGPA / 4 x 100

Worked example

  • Semester 1: GPA 3.20 with 18 credits = 57.60 points. Semester 2: GPA 3.45 with 17 credits = 58.65 points.
  • Semester 3: GPA 3.10 with 18 credits = 55.80 points. Semester 4: GPA 3.60 with 16 credits = 57.60 points.
  • Total = 229.65 points over 69 credits.
  • CGPA = 229.65 / 69 = 3.33.

Grading scale used in Pakistani universities

Most HEC-recognised universities grade on a 4.00 scale. A common set of bands is: A from 85 marks (4.00), A- 80 to 84 (3.67), B+ 75 to 79 (3.33), B 71 to 74 (3.00), B- 68 to 70 (2.67), C+ 64 to 67 (2.33), C 61 to 63 (2.00), C- 58 to 60 (1.67), D+ 54 to 57 (1.33), D 50 to 53 (1.00) and F below 50.

Some universities, such as those with relative grading, use different bands, and some semester-system colleges affiliated with older universities still use percentages. Check your university handbook if your result card uses other cut-offs.

GPA is for one semester; CGPA is cumulative across all semesters you have completed. Courses with more credit hours have a bigger effect, so a good grade in a 4-credit course lifts your CGPA more than in a 1-credit lab.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is the average for one semester. CGPA is the weighted average of all semesters so far.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

A common method is (CGPA / 4) x 100. Some universities issue their own equivalence, so check yours.

Do credit hours matter?

Yes. Courses and semesters with more credit hours carry more weight in GPA and CGPA.

What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?

Many employers and scholarships look for 3.00 or above; competitive programmes often want 3.50 or above.

Which grading scale does this use?

A common HEC-style 4.00 scale with A at 85 and above. You can pick the letter grade instead of marks if your scale differs.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.

About the CGPA Calculator

Universities in Pakistan report results as GPA for each semester and CGPA for the whole degree, usually on a 4.00 scale. Employers, scholarship committees and admission offices often ask for CGPA, and sometimes for a percentage equivalent.

This calculator does three jobs: it works out your semester GPA from course marks or grades, combines semester GPAs into a CGPA using credit hours, and converts CGPA to a percentage.

It is useful before a result is announced, to see what grades you need to reach a target, or to double-check the numbers on your transcript.

GPAGrade Point Average for one semester.
CGPACumulative GPA across all completed semesters.
Credit hoursThe weight of a course, usually 1 to 4.
Grade pointThe value of a grade, for example A = 4.00.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Averaging GPAs without credits

Semesters with more credits count more.

Using the wrong scale

Most universities use 4.00, a few use 5.00.

Counting failed and repeated courses twice

Follow your university's repeat policy.

Wrong grade bands

Some universities use different cut-offs.

Rounding each semester

Keep two decimals until the end.

Assuming a fixed percentage formula

Ask if your university has an official conversion.

They move your CGPA the most.

More Questions

What CGPA do I need for MS or MPhil?

Many programmes ask for at least 2.50 or 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or the HEC minimum). Check each university.

Can I raise my CGPA in the last semester?

A little. Early semesters have already added many credit hours, so the effect gets smaller over time.

What is a 5.00 scale?

A few institutions grade on 5.00. Choose 5.00 in the converter.

How are F grades counted?

An F is usually 0 points but its credit hours still count, unless the course is repeated.

Does HEC have a single conversion?

Universities issue their own equivalence; the CGPA / 4 x 100 method is a common estimate.

Do labs count?

Yes, lab credit hours are added like any other course.
