How it is calculated
X% of Y = X / 100 x Y
X is what % of Y = X / Y x 100
Change % = (new - old) / old x 100
Increase by P% = number x (1 + P / 100), discount by P% = number x (1 - P / 100)
Worked example
- Marks: 945 out of 1100 = 945 / 1100 x 100 = 85.91%, grade A+.
- 15% of 2,500 = 0.15 x 2,500 = 375.
- Salary from 80,000 to 92,000 = 12,000 / 80,000 x 100 = 15% increase.
- 10% discount on 50,000 = 50,000 x 0.90 = 45,000.
Board grades for Matric and Intermediate
Pakistani boards have long graded results by percentage: A+ for 80% and above, A for 70 to 79%, B for 60 to 69%, C for 50 to 59%, D for 40 to 49% and E for 33 to 39%. Below 33% is a fail. Some boards are moving to newer grading schemes, so the grade on your result card is the official one.
Percentages are also used every day in business: discounts, GST, profit margins, commission, salary increments and price changes. The add or take off option is handy for these, and the change option shows exactly how much a price or salary went up or down.
A common mistake is to add percentage changes directly. A 10% rise followed by a 10% fall does not bring you back to the start, because the second change is on a different base. Use the calculator step by step for each change.
